Charles Heidelberger and Helga Straube Rieke

( McArdle Memorial Laboratory, Medical School, University of Wisconsin, Madison 6, Wis.)

The syntheses of two radioactive carcinogens of high specific activity are described in detail.

3,4-Benzpyrene-5-C14, specific activity 2.8 µc. per milligram, was obtained in over-all yield of 22 per cent, based on barium carbonate.

2-Acetylaminofluorene-9-C14, specific activity 4.55 µc. per milligram, was obtained in over-all yield of 50 per cent, based on barium carbonate.

* An abstract of part of this report appeared in Cancer Research, 11:255, 1951.

{dagger} This work was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Section of the American Cancer Society.

Received 4/26/51.
