Further Evidence for Maternal Effect and Modifiers of Tumorous Head Genes in Natural Populations of Drosophila Melanogaster*

Eldon J. Gardner and Morris D. Gardner

( Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, Utah)

1. Twenty-eight populations from widely scattered geographical locations carried modifiers of genes for tumorous head in different frequencies, whereas in laboratory stocks previously tested such genes were either completely absent or homozygous.
2. Consistently different results in F1 reciprocal crosses indicated a maternal effect. No difference was detected in the F2 results of the reciprocal crosses.

* This investigation was supported in part by the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund and in part by a grant-in-aid from the American Cancer Society upon recommendation by the Committee on Growth of the National Research Council.

Received 3/27/53.
