II. The in Vitro Uptake of Alanine-1-C14 by Preneoplastic Liver and Hepatoma Mitochondrial Protein*

1. The stimulation of in vitro incorporation of C14-labeled amino acids into mitochondrial proteins by factors in the mitochondrial-free supernatant and by ATP has been confirmed.
2. Preneoplastic and hepatoma mitochondria showed increases of approximately 50 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively, in uptake activity when compared to normal liver preparations.
3. Limited but suggestive evidence has been noted of a wide divergence in the pattern of incorporation of C14 between preneoplastic and normal preparations.
4. The enhanced incorporation has been discussed from the point of view of compatibility with the protein synthetic requirements of AAF carcinogenesis.
