Electrophoretic Analysis of the Macromolecular Nucleoprotein Particles of Mammalian Cytoplasm

Mary L. Petermann, Mary G. Hamilton and Nancy A. Mizen*,{dagger}

( Laboratories of the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, New York, N.Y.)

The preparation and electrophoretic analysis of the macromolecular nucleoprotein particles of normal and leukemic mouse spleen and of regenerating rat liver have been described. The best patterns were obtained on undialyzed preparations. The results confirm those of ultracentrifugal analysis in suggesting that in various types of tissue the macromolecular particles are qualitatively similar but are present in differing amounts. The best preparations contained no free nucleic acid. In leukemic mouse spleen a small increase in the electrophoretic mobility of the microsomes has been observed.

{dagger} Presented in part at the American Society of Biological Chemists, Chicago, Illinois, April, 1953 (abstr., see ref. 11).
