Aldolase Content of Normal and Neoplastic Tissue*

John A. Sibley and Gerard A. Fleisher

( Department of Urology, Mayo Foundation, and Section of Biochemistry, Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation{dagger}, Rochester, Minnesota)

In a study of 23 surgical specimens of adenocarcinoma of the colon and rectum, there was an increased content of aldolase in the malignant tissue as compared with that in adjacent normal mucosa.

The variation in the proportion of epithelial cells in sections of tumor tissue necessitated correction of the values obtained in order to estimate the enzyme content of the malignant cells.

The possible significance of a rise in the concentration of a glycolytic enzyme during malignant transformation has been discussed.

* Abridgment of a portion of the thesis submitted by Dr. Sibley to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Urology.

{dagger} The Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota, is a part of the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota.

Received 5/13/55.
