Benign and Invasive Tumors Induced in Drosophila by an Inherited Tumor-inducing Factor*

F. Friedman and L. Burton

( Division of Biology, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif.)

Crude preparations of a tumor-inducing factor obtained from tu-e larvae induce benign, free-floating tumors. The invasive tumors induced by the tumor-inducing factor in purified preparations appear to be lethal.

A new culture medium has been devised in which Drosophila tumors can be cultured successfully with and without the presence of normal tissue.
