The Action of 2-Acetylaminofluorene on Growth and Liver Composition of Rats on Low and Adequate Dietary Sulfur*

1. The carcinogen, 2-acetylaminofluorene, inhibited the growth of pair-fed rats maintained on an 11 per cent casein diet. The growth-inhibitory action of 2-acetylaminofluorene was eliminated by feeding a 20 per cent casein diet. Addition of DL-methionine, L-cystine, or glycine to the 11 per cent casein ration failed to prevent the growth inhibition induced by 2-acetylaminofluorene.
2. The livers of the rats were analyzed for water, fat, nitrogen, and glycogen. 2-Acetylamino-fluorene caused liver enlargement due to increased deposition of fat, protein, and, particularly, glycogen. The action of AAF in altering the chemical composition of the liver is influenced by the sulfur content of the diet.
