Influence of Gonadectomy and Foster-Nursing on the Metabolism of Calcium in C3H, C57BL, and A Mice

1. The influence of (a) inherited susceptibility to mammary tumor, (b) foster-nursing, and (c) gonadectomy on the metabolism of calcium has been investigated, using C3H (Bar), C57BL, and Strong A mice.
2. Early gonadectomy disturbed the metabolism of calcium, and heavy deposits of calcium phosphate were found in breast and kidneys of C3H (Bar) mice.
3. Gonadectomized C57BL mice, foster-nursed by C3H (Bar) mothers, also showed a heavy deposition of calcium in breast tissue.
4. Calcium and phosphorus levels were significantly lower in the bones of C3H castrates.
5. Adrenal hyperplasia and rise in calcium levels seemed to be parallel.
6. A possible hypothesis implicating the imbalance of steroid hormones in favor of corticoids and subnormal levels of sex hormones has been presented to explain the derangement of calcium metabolism observed.
