Data have been presented to demonstrate that methionine and cystine reduce the growth of Sarcoma R-1, increase the body weight, increase food efficiency, and increase
body/tumor ratios. Supplementation with guanidoacetic acid proved to be toxic, this toxicity being overcome when combined with the sulfur amino acids. Guanidoacetic acid or glycine in combination with methionine resulted in increased food efficiency and body/tumor ratios, a response which suggests a specific role for these acids.
* Supported by an Institutional Grant from the American Cancer Society.
The data presented here are taken from a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Rutgers University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
