Survival Studies of Chromium-51-labeled Erythrocytes in Tumor-bearing Rabbits*

John E. Ultmann{dagger}, Winthrop Fish and George A. Hyman

( Medical Service, Francis Delafield Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, N.Y.)

Survival studies of chromium-Cr51-labeled erythrocytes in rabbits with Brown-Pearce or XV2 carcinoma demonstrated no significant deviation of the red cell life span from the normal of 60–70 days. Shortened red cell life spans were demonstrated with severe infection and with acetyl phenylhydrazine-induced hemolysis.

* Presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, Atlantic City, N.J., April 14, 1956.

This investigation was supported in part by Grants C-1923 C2 and C-2332 C from the National Cancer Institute, U.S. Public Health Service, and in part by the Hyman Goldburg Memorial Fund.

{dagger} Clinical Fellow (hematology) of the American Cancer Society.

Received 5/18/56.
