The Significance of Chymotrypsin-Inhibitor Levels in the Serum of Patients with Carcinoma of the Breast*

S. F. Livingston, I. Silverman and A. E. Sobel

( Department of Diseases of the Breast, Division of General Surgery, and Department of Biochemistry, Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn, Brooklyn, N.Y.)

A method for the determination of chymotrypsin-inhibitor levels in blood serum is presented with L-tyrosine isopropyl ester used as substrate.

The highest chymotrypsin-inhibitor values in our series of cases of breast carcinoma were found most frequently in pre-operative and recurrent cases.

In recurrence of carcinoma, the chymotrypsin-inhibitor values were increased more often than the alkaline phosphatase.

* This investigation was made possible through the generous support of "The Friendly Group for Cancer Research."
