-Hydroxylysine-an Inhibitor of Glutamine and Protein Synthesis by the Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cell*
( Department of Physiological Chemistry, University of California School of Medicine, Berkeley, Calif.)
Synthetic
-hydroxylysine noncompetitively inhibits the incorporation in vitro of several radioactive amino acids into Ehrlich ascites cell protein. The inhibitory activity of the mixture of racemates resides with the unnatural allo form. Glutamine specifically prevents and relieves the inhibition, which is at the site of synthesis of this amino acid. The results confirm the earlier conclusion (8) that glutamine is the limiting component amino acid involved in protein synthesis by the Ehrlich ascites cell and that the synthesis of protein by this cell is linked to the synthesis of glutamine.
