Reversibility of Hydrocortisone-effected Regression of Induced Skin Carcinomas in Mice*

L. Zachariae and G. Asboe-Hansen

( Connective Tissue Research Laboratory, University Institute of Medical Anatomy, Copenhagen, Denmark)

Hydrocortisone acetate was injected, once weekly for 16 weeks, topically into skin carconimas induced by painting the dorsal skin of mice twice weekly for 6 weeks with 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene. During the first 8–11 weeks, this resulted in regression of the tumors, which decreased in size or disappeared entirely. After the 11th week, however, the tumors started growing again, and the number of deaths increased—mainly among the mice bearing large tumors. The observation period extended over 24 weeks.
