The embryo toxic factors which develop in association with the continuous cultivation of various types of tumor tissue in eggs have been successfully cultivated in eggs independently of the presence of the source tumor tissue. This has been accomplished with yolk, allantoic and amniotic fluids from eggs bearing implants of C3H and DBA mouse mammary tumors, a rat sarcoma, and a human carcinoma. Eleven different lines of the toxic agent have been carried from 7 to 45 egg passages with a lethality to 4-day chick embryos, varying according to the line, of 27 days. It is suggested that the embryo toxic factor may arise as a mutation of the tumor agent.
