Mice bearing Ehrlich ascites tumors were given 600 r of whole-body x-ray. This reduced survival time substantially below that observed in untreated tumor-bearing animals but produced a marked depression of cell number and fluid volume in inverse relation to the time between inoculation and irradiation. Irradiation of the abdominal regions with 600 or 1000 r prolonged survival, but the decrease in cell number and fluid volume was less clearly a function of tumor size. The magnitude of the effect produced by fractionated radiation was not predictable from that found with single exposures.
