Ultrastructure of Pulmonary Adenomas in Mice*

Donald J. Svoboda

( Department of Pathology and Oncology, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas)

Electron microscopic study of spontaneous and induced pulmonary adenomas in mice supported the view that such tumors arise from alveolar epithelium. Acidophilic intranuclear inclusions consisted of invaginations of cytoplasm and of myelin figures and did not suggest a relationship to viral particles. Lamellar transformation of mitochondria, described previously in conditions associated with retention of CO2 by alveolar epithelium, was a prominent change in adenoma cells. Two additional changes, designated as cytoplasmic sequestrations and cisternal dilatation or "lakes," both interpreted as alterations involving endoplasmic reticulum, are described. No evidence of virus-like particles was present in any of the tumors studied.
