Preliminary observations were made on the survival time of Fischer rats given transplants of sublines of IRC 741 leukemia obtained from rats that had been treated with various compounds. Some of the donor rats had received treatment beginning the day after tumor transplantation, and treatment of others had been initiated 10 days after tumor transplantation. Rats given transplants of tumor tissue from donors that had received treatment beginning on day 1 seemed to live longer than recipients of tumor tissue from donors that had received treatment beginning on day 10. Experiments with five alkylating agents and one antibiotic supported this observation.
In addition, chemotherapy of rats bearing tumors from previously treated donors demonstrated that early treatment of donors attenuated the malignancy of the tumor and made it more responsive to treatment. Tumors from donor rats that had received treatment beginning on day 10 were resistant to treatment when transplanted into recipient hosts.
