Chromosomes in Normal, Preneoplastic, and Neoplastic Tissues of the Mammary Glands of C3H/Crgl Female Mice*

M. R. Banerjee and K. B. DeOme

( Department of Zoology and Its Cancer Research Genetics Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.)

Normal mammary lobules, precancerous primary hyperplastic alveolar nodules, nodule outgrowths under various transplanted conditions, and mammary tumors produced by these outgrowths were examined for their chromosome constitutions. These tissues were mostly diploid, with no detectable structural aberrations. Occasionally, aneuploid modal chromosome numbers were observed in some nodule outgrowths and tumors derived from them. No correlation with regard to the aneuploid chromosome pattern between the outgrowths and their tumors could be found. This preliminary investigation suggests that the aneuploidy in precancerous outgrowths and their tumors are two independent events, and the host can permit the growth of non-neoplastic nodule outgrowths having a modal number of chromosomes other than diploid. Further significance of these findings has been discussed.
