Nutritional Requirements for Cultivation of the Canine Transmissible Sarcoma Cell*

J. E. Prier

( School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

The nutritional requirements of the canine transmissible sarcoma cell in monolayer culture have been studied. It was found that the cell is particularly affected by moderate to large amounts of SH-amino acids. Although a small amount of cystine (cysteine) is required, as is true with mammalian cells in culture in general, amounts that are found in many routine tissue culture media exert a lethal effect on primary cultures of the cell. The effect is not manifested once the cell growth has been established.
