Plasma Glycoproteins in the Rat Bearing Walker 256 Carcinoma*

Robert A. L. Macbeth, J. George Bekesi and Jules Tuba

( Departments of Surgery and Biochemistry and the Surgical-Medical Research Institute, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada)

A total of 95 rats have been sacrificed at various intervals following the intramuscular implantation of Walker 256 carcinoma and the plasma protein-bound hexoses, hexosamines, sialic acid, and fucose determined on the total plasma glycoprotein fraction.

All plasma protein-bound carbohydrates manifest significant elevations over normal control values, but the magnitude of the elevation and the time of its occurrence were different for the different carbohydrates.

* This investigation was supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute of Canada (N.C.I. #226) and from the Medical Research Fund of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Alberta (M.R. 205).

Received 2/11/63.
