A Review of Some Aspects of 5-Iododeoxyuridine and Azauridine*

William H. Prusoff

( Department of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut)

A review has been presented of selected aspects of 5-iododeoxyuridine (IUDR) and of 6-azauridine. Some of the basic problems which may be of pertinence to the successful use of IUDR clinically have been indicated. Although the role of IUDR as a chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of neoplasms, either alone or in combination with other compounds or radiation, is still under investigation, its role as an anti-viral agent in the treatment of some established DNA-viral infections in animals as well as in man has been well substantiated.

* This investigation was supported by a grant (CY-5262) from the National Cancer Institute, U.S. Public Health Service.
