Studies on the Mechanism of the Growth-inhibitory Action of Galactoflavin in Rats*

Montague Lane

( Departments of Pharmacology and Medicine, Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston, Texas)

The effects of a riboflavin-deficient diet alone and in combination with galactoflavin, a riboflavin antagonist, were studied in adult rats. In addition to intensifying the development of weight loss and signs of riboflavin deficiency, galactoflavin increased the depletion of riboflavin and its nucleotides from the liver. There was no evidence for the formation of nucleotides of galactoflavin. The antagonist appeared to exert its major effect by displacing riboflavin from the liver.
