Serum protein-bound fucose has been determined in the total serum and the seromucoid fraction of 89 female patients presenting with a breast mass. The diagnosis of the breast lesion was subsequently established in all patients by histologic study. No significant difference exists between the levels recorded in patients bearing malignant and those in patients with benign lesions. Therefore, the previous suggestion that serum protein-bound fucose might be a useful screening procedure for patients with breast masses has not been confirmed.
