Ten rats painted twice weekly with 1 ml of 0.2% 3-methoxy-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene in acetone all developed multiple skin tumors irrespective of whether they were fed maize containing 0.5% cupric oxyacetate hexahydrate or maize alone. The average induction time was 46 weeks, but during the following 16 weeks large numbers of lesions occurred. these were usually keratinous and covered up to 5 sq cm of skin. All lesions were found within the painted area on the dorsal skin, and the histologic types of tumor were the same as have been found in rats treated with other carcinogens: squamous carcinoma, keratoacanthoma, and basal cell carcinoma sometimes with sebaceous or trichoepitheliomatous differentiation. Apart from 3 ear duct tumors, no lesions at other sites were detected.
