This review discusses morphologic, taxonomic, pathophysiologic, and etiologic advances in nineteenth century oncology. Progress in research on human neoplastic diseases in examined with reference to the origins of experimental research on cancer and related diseases, described in a previous report. A critical bibliography accompanies the discussion.
