Antitumor Activity of Periodate-Oxidation Products of Carbohydrates and Their Derivatives1

William Dvonch, Horace Fletcher, III, Francis J. Gregory, Ethel-May H. Healy, George H. Warren and Harvey E. Alburn

Research Division, Wyeth Laboratories, Radnor, Pennsylvania

The inhibitory effects of a number of periodate-oxidation products of carbohydrates and carbohydrate derivatives were studied on various transplanted tumors in mice and on a variety of microorganisms. Many of the compounds showed striking inhibition of Ehrlich ascites and inhibition of Leukemia L1210 in mice. The compounds were not active against Sarcoma 180 and Adenocarcinoma 755 or against any of the microorganisms studied.

1 Presented in part at the 55th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research April 9–11, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois. A portion of the antitumor testing was supported by contracts (SA-43 ph-3073; ph 43-63-1131) with the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center, National Cancer Institute, NIH.

Received 11/30/64. Accepted 6/ 8/66.
