A study was made to determine the mucopolysaccharide content of 4 types of animal tumors: Flexner-Jobling carcinoma, Walker carcinoma 256, rat fibrosarcomas, and Sarcoma 180. Of these, largest amounts of mucopolysaccharides were found in the induced fibrosarcomas and in the Flexner-Jobling carcinomas. Sarcoma 180 and Walker carcinoma 256 contained minute amounts.
The mucopolysaccharides in the fibrosarcomas were shown to be hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate. In addition to these substances, the Flexner-Jobling carcinoma also contains appreciable amounts of a heparin-type compound.
1 This investigation was supported by a grant (U-1237) from the Health Research Council of the City of New York and by USPHS Research Grant No. CA-01620-13 from the National Cancer Institute.
