-Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydrase Activity in Friend Virus-Infected Mice1
Endocrine Section, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Pathology and Microbiology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado
The
-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase (DALAD)2 activity sharply increased in the spleen and liver of mice 1 week after inoculation with Friend virus (FV). FV causes leukemia and polycythemia in mice. The increase in DALAD activity corresponded to an increased 59Fe uptake in the spleen and liver, which indicates that DALAD activity is a useful parameter of erythropoietic activity. The data suggest that DALAD may be the key enzyme in hemoglobin biosynthesis.

2 The abbreviations used are: DALAD,
-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase; FV, Friend virus; PBG, porphobilinogen; FV-R, Friend virus from the Roswell Park Memorial Institute; and EPF, rabbit plasma erythropoietic factor.
