The Effect of Actinomycin D on Ultrastructure and Radioautographic Ribonucleic Acid and Protein Labeling in Rat Liver after Partial Hepatectomy1

Unne Stenram and Roger Willén

Department of Pathology, University of Uppsala, Uppsala, Sweden

The effect of actinomycin on radioautographic RNA and protein labeling and ultrastructure was studied in the liver of rats after partial hepatectomy. Actinomycin almost eliminated nucleolar RNA labeling and strongly inhibited cytoplasmic RNA labeling. The protein labeling was reduced only over nucleoli. The hepatectomized, untreated animals showed large nucleoli and hypertrophic endoplasmic reticulum. The hepatectomized, actinomycin-treated animals showed small, collapsed nucleoli and an endoplasmic reticulum similar to that of nonoperated animals.
