Effect of Surgery, Hormones, and Nutrition on Mammary Cancer Induced by 3-Methylcholanthrene in Female Wistar Rats1

Margot Gruenstein, Dolores Thatcher, Mary Acuff and Michael B. Shimkin2

Surgical removal of the initial mammary cancer in female Wistar rats given intragastric instillations of 3-methylcholanthrene (NSC-21970) did not affect significantly the appearance of additional mammary cancers. Ovariectomy was the most effective therapeutic procedure for the inhibition of mammary cancer. Exogenous testosterone propionate (NSC-9166) and estradiol benzoate (NSC-9566) temporarily inhibited the appearance of additional neoplasms.
