Radiosensitivity of Leukemic and Nonleukemic Lymphocytes

Ralph E. Johnson

Radiation Branch, National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland

Ten patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and 13 patients with nonleukemic diagnoses have been treated with total body radiation in small divided doses. The response of the hemoglobin count, platelet count, and absolute neutrophil count was similar for both groups of patients. The absolute lymphocyte counts were markedly reduced in the leukemic patients as compared to the nonleukemic patients. Similar changes were observed in the bone marrow. The fractionated dosage schedules provided a high therapeutic ratio and resulted in an apparently normal or nearly normal morphologic state in the peripheral blood and bone marrow of several patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
