Light and electron microscope studies were carried out on organs and tissues of 13 mice of the SJL/J strain with changes resembling lymphoma, described by E. D. Murphy as Hodgkin's-like disease. On the basis of histologic examination, the changes observed in the organs of these mice could be classified into the following three types: reticulum cell neoplasm Type A; Type B; mixed Type A and B.
Mature and immature leukemia Type C virus particles were observed in organs and tissues of all 13 of the SJL/J strain mice examined, irrespective of the histologic type of lesion. There was a considerable variation in the number of virus particles observed in the various organs, including liver and kidneys, of the different mice of this strain. No difference could be found in size and morphologic appearance between these virus particles and those present in other types of murine leukemia. In a few instances intracisternal Type A virus particles were also seen, but the significance of this type of virus particle is unknown. In the present study murine leukemia Type C virus particles were also found in a spontaneous mammary tumor of an SJL/J strain mouse. It is of interest that no mouse mammary tumor (Bittner) or Type B virus particles could be observed in this tumor.
On the basis of the described findings the search for similar virus particles in Hodgkin's disease of man appears to be advisable.
