Comparative Aspects of Aflatoxin-induced Hepatic Tumors

M. C. Lancaster

Nuffield Unit for Laboratory Animal Pathology, Edinburgh, Scotland

Aflatoxin-induced carcinomas have been described in the rat and trout and hepatomas in the ferret, duck, and sheep.

The mixed nature of these tumors, derived from hepatic parenchymal cell and bile duct epitheleum, is a feature of the tumors of the rat, ferret, duck, and trout.

In spite of the extensive range of species which are susceptible to the toxic or carcinogenic effect of aflatoxin, no prediction can be made on susceptibility from one species to another. And it may be that man, like the mouse, is highly resistant to both the toxic and carcinogenic effect of aflatoxin.
