An estrogen (F-2) produced by Fusarium graminearum under natural conditions, causes marked uterotropic response in rats, mice, gilts, and guinea pigs and is suspected of contributing to problems of infertility in dairy cattle. Its range of biologic activity is quite broad. Besides its activity in animals, it also has a stimulating effect in bud initiation of tobacco pith callus tissue in culture and affects the sexual cycle of various fungi. Out of the study of the biosynthesis of F-2, four other estrogenic metabolites produced by F. graminearum have been discovered.
