This is a review of the geographic distribution of oropharyngeal cancers and of chewing habits which involve various plant materials and additives including lime. Cancers in the oropharynx and esophagus may be induced by the same carcinogens. Suspected plant carcinogens in the environments of patients with high frequencies of cancers of the oropharynx or esophagus are being tested in hamster cheek pouches which have been treated with calcium hydroxide (lime).
