Tumors of the Marmoset Produced by Rous Sarcoma Virus1

Barnet M. Levy, A. Cecil Taylor, Suzanne Hampton and George W. Thoma

The University of Texas Dental Science Institute, and the Department of Pathology, The University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston, Texas 77025

Twenty-five newborn marmosets were injected with Rous sarcoma virus. Eight animals died within one month of the injection. Forty-five percent of the remaining animals developed tumors at the site of inoculation. The tumors were rhabdomyosarcomas, fibrosarcomas, and osteosarcomas. The type of tumor produced was dependent on the site of virus injection. Metastatic lesions were found in animals bearing rhabdomyosarcomas and fibrosarcomas, but not in animals with osteosarcomas.

1 This investigation was supported by USPHS Grant DE 02232 from the National Institute of Dental Research, and by Contract No. PH43-65-628 from the National Cancer Institute.
