The Immunodepressive Activity of Escherichia coli L-Asparaginase in Some Transplantation Systems1

Giovanni Brambilla, Silvio Parodi, Marco Cavanna, Carlo E. Caraceni and Luciano Baldini

Istituto di Farmacologia dell'Università di Genova, 16132-Genova, and Istituto di Farmacologia e Farmacognosia dell'Università di Trieste, 34127-Trieste, Italy

Escherichia coli L-asparaginase significantly prolonged the median survival time of skin grafts in H-2- and H-Y-incompatible mice and promoted the outgrowth of L1210 leukemia allografts in the C57BL/6 strain, its effectiveness being in these systems comparable to or even higher than that of azathioprine. The immunodepressive effect was decreased neither by heat inactivation nor by simultaneous administration of L-asparagine.

1 This investigation was supported by a grant from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.

Received 2/ 6/70. Accepted 7/ 8/70.
