Two genes at the agouti locus in the house mouse, lethal yellow (Ay) and viable yellow (Avy), induce increased normal and neoplastic growth. Growth of allogeneic Sarcoma 37 cells in inbred yellow Ay/a YS/ChWf and Avy/a VY/Wf mice is stimulated in comparison with similar implants in the nonyellow aa siblings. These results suggest that the stimulatory effect of the yellow phenotype on tumor cell growth is systemic in nature. It has been suggested elsewhere that this effect may be mediated by an increased free sulfhydryl:disulfide ratio which would alter the metabolic pattern of the animal toward increased anabolic activity.
