Sex Factors in Growth of Malignant Melanoma in Hamsters: In Vivo and in Vitro Correlation1

George Lipkin

Department of Dermatology, New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York 10016

Transplanted amelanotic and melanotic strains of hamster malignant melanoma grew faster and were more rapidly lethal in females than in males. In vitro growth of the amelanotic strain was inhibited markedly by testosterone and weakly by estradiol. These findings and a review of earlier animal work suggest that sex steroids may influence growth of malignant melanoma in several species.
