Hormonal Effects on Thymidine Kinase Activity in Normal Rat Adrenal and in Hormone-dependent Adrenal Carcinoma1

M. R. Garland, Therese Ng and J. F. Richards2

Cancer Research Centre and Department of Biochemistry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver 8, B. C., Canada

In estrogen-dependent rat adrenocortical carcinomas, thymidine kinase activity decreased during tumor regression following removal of estrogen from the host. The change in the kinase activity could be prevented by estrogen administration but not by the administration of growth hormone or adrenocorticotropic hormone. The alterations in kinase activity were not due to changes in the activity of competing enzymes. Studies of the normal rat adrenal showed that the kinase activity of this tissue is independent of the estrogen supply of the host animal.
