At least one antigen of the virion coat of the mammary tumor virus (MTV) is common to all strains of MTV studied; thus, this virus is characterized by external group-specific antigenicity. In addition, several coat antigens possessed by one or several, but not all, MTV strains have been detected by means of absorption procedures in immunodiffusion. These antigens are not equivalent to the type-specific antigens characteristic of the avian leukosis-sarcoma complex; the distinctive antigens of the MTV complex do not correlate in distribution with the known characteristics of the virus strains.
