A characteristic three-line electron spin resonance signal which has been reported to be observed very frequently in ascites tumors or neoplastic tissues was proved to be obtainable also in normal tissues that had decayed on standing for 1 or 2 days at room temperature. The presence of oxygen inhibits the production of this signal.
The three-line signal produced in some ascites tumors was found to change its pattern remarkably in the presence of oxygen.
The origin of these spectra is attributable to NO-hemoproteins according to the conditions required for the production of the signal and the spectral character. The three-line signal may correspond to the denatured form of the protein, and the signal obtained after the action of oxygen may correspond to the native form.
It seems that the three-line signal is related to the ascites tumors, but an exact answer to this problem has not yet been obtained.
