The percentage of tumor cells that incorporated tritiated thymidine during a 24-hr in vitro incubation was determined in 565 human tumors. The percentage of cells labeled with thymidine varied greatly among tumors arising from the same tissue of origin. The mean percentage of cells labeled was 2.9. No relationship could be demonstrated between the percentage of tumor cells labeled with thymidine and the response to monthly courses of 5-fluorouracil in 148 patients.
