-Globulin in Rat Serum during Carcinogenesis with 4-Dimethylaminoazobenzene
Department of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan
The effect of oral administration of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene on the appearance of embryonic
-globulin (designated
f-globulin) in rat sera was studied.
f-Globulin appeared in rat serum as early as the 3rd week after onset of feeding of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (the early-stage appearance). Its appearance was observed in 31 (76%) of 41 rats at the 6th week. Subsequently it decreased, and by the 11th to 12th weeks it disappeared from the serum. After 13 weeks, it reappeared in 27 of the 33 rats (the late-stage appearance), and 26 of those animals developed hepatomas.
Of the 22 rats in which
f-globulin appeared in the "early" stage, 20(91%) developed hepatomas after 19 weeks.
At the 6th week, the average serum level of
f-globulin was 2 to 4 mg/dl, but after 13 weeks it reached 60 to 100 mg/dl.
