A cancer-induced change occurs in the serum of golden hamsters bearing transplantable cheek pouch tumors. The appearance of this change is a function of time after transplantation and the number of tumor cells injected into the animals. The serum change is caused by 1.5 x 106 tumor cells within 24 hr after transplantation. Removal of the cheek pouch by surgical excision caused the serum change to disappear within 6 to 8 days. The criterion used to detect these changes was the ability of the serum to reduce the number of hamster ascites multinucleated cells in vitro. The serum change appears to be associated with the seromucoid fraction of cancer serum.
