Duration of S phase and labeling index were measured in basal cell carcinoma and in normal human epidermis with an in vitro double labeling technique. Evaluation of the growth fraction in basal cell carcinoma was performed after in vivo labeling with thymidine-3H. The results indicate that growth fraction in this tumor is approximately 0.8, while indirect evidence suggests a growth fraction near 1 in normal skin. The main difference between the 2 tissues is a much longer S phase in basal cell carcinoma (19.2 hr) than in normal epidermis (10.3 hr), although both tissues exhibited a similar cell cycle time.
