Effect of Hypophysectomy on Rat Leukemia Cells

Hisao Oka, Masayasu Aida, Shoichi Yamada, Kazuo Hayama and Tomio Oda

Department of Pathology, Wakayama Medical College, Wakayama 640, Japan

Posthypophysectomy activities, changes of lactate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase isozymes, and the ultrastructure of leukemia cells induced by 7,8,12-trimethylbenz(a)anthracene were studied. Ten days postoperatively, lactate dehydrogenase activity showed about a 60% decrease of preoperative value. Morphologically, a decrease in the quantity of endoplasmic reticulum and a variation in the size of mitochondria in leukemia cells were observed on the sixth day postoperatively, following complete hypophysectomy.
