The sulfated mucopolysaccharide composition of seven gliomas compared with the sulfated mucopolysaccharide composition of normal cerebral tissues is reported. In all tumors a significantly higher amount of chondroltin sulfate C was found, which is nearly absent in normal brain tissues. The increase of this compound is accompanied by a decrease of chondroitin 4-sulfate in the tumors. The role of chondroitin 6-sulfate in neoplastic transformation is discussed in view of these and other findings.
