and ß and the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor by Human Tumors
Department of Molecular Biology, Genentech, Inc., South San Francisco, California 94080 [R. D., D. V. G., A. U., T. S. B., W. H. B.]; Department of Clinical Immunology and Biological Therapy, M. D. Anderson Hospital, Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas 77032 [J. U. G.]; and University of California Urology Service, Veterans Administration Medical Center, San Francisco, California 94121 [R. D. W.]
Human tumors and tumor cell lines were analyzed for the presence of mRNA coding for transforming growth factors
and ß (TGF-
and -ß) and the epidermal growth factor receptor. TGF-
mRNA was not detectable in hematopoietic tumor cell lines but was found in a variety of solid tumor cells, particularly carcinomas. Many of the tumors that contained TGF-
mRNA also expressed high levels of epidermal growth factor receptor mRNA. The concentration of TGF-
in the media of several tumor cell lines did not necessarily correlate with TGF-
mRNA levels, as a substantial fraction of TGF-
can remain cell associated. The levels of TGF-
mRNA in tumor cell lines and tumor specimens were variable, but higher in tumors than in the adjacent normal tissues.
