Supplementary Video 1
Principle of collective movement from primary melanoma explant (time-lapse videomicroscopy). Onset of migrating cluster from black solid explant (top left) after 7 days of culture in collagen and migration towards the lower right corner. Translocation resulted from polarized filopodial ruffling at the leading edge, while detachment occurred from the trailing edge. Time is indicated in the top right corner (hh:mm:ss).

Supplementary Video 2
Initial events after blocking of anti-ß1 integrins. Antibody 4B4 was added at the beginning of this sequence. 4 hours later (approx. time: 03:00:00), the cluster migrated out of the field of view. After readjustment of the video stage, the previous leading edge was directed towards the bottom. 11 hours after mAb addition (approx. time: 10:00:00), a second leading edge developed in previously non-migrating cells of the initial trailing edge, pulling towards the top and opposing migration persistence.

Supplementary Video 3
Splitting of the cluster and conversion to ameboid single cell crawling. Approx. 25 h after addition of mAb 4B4, the previous leading edge pulled towards the lower left corner and the newly developed migratory subset to the upper right corner, disrupting the cluster into two independent fragments. Multiple single cells from different locations within the fragments detached and migrated within the collagen via ameboid migration. Characteristics of "ameboid" movement included simple elliptoid shape, rapid shape change and oscillating path structure.

Supplementary Video 4
Abolished cluster migration and persisting ameboid movement. Approx. 48 h after addition of mAb 4B4, non-directionally oszillating cluster fragments allow the detachment of further cells. While cluster migration was dependent on ß1 integrins, single cell crawling was ß1-independent.
